Many say this is the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro, your efforts will be rewarded with a unique scenic splendour that is not seen on the other commonly traversed routes. This route is often referred to as the “Whiskey route" is better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker.  Unlike the Marangu route, in which you sleep in huts, you will sleep in tents on this route the Machame.  However all your equipment and supplied will be carried up the mountain by our friendly porters and delicious meals will be made for you each day.

Most climbers choose to use 6 days to climb (although an additional acclimatisation day can be included on request).  Acclimatisation is the key to success with this mountain and on this route we climb high to the lava tower (4,630m) on day three and then come back down by nearly 700m to overnight, this helps you to acclimatise even better.

Below is an example itinerary, all our programmes are flexible and tailored to the individual groups so please let us know if you would like to make any changes.

The day before your climb you will receive a full briefing from our climbing team, all your equipment will receive a final check and we will be able to answer any of your questions.

Camping equipment is included in the price, including tents and sleeping mats. Sleeping bag (which can be rented), flashlight and clothes is not included. Below is a list of suggestions:

Itinerary

Resting at the foot of Mount Meru, the sprawling city of Arusha is known as the safari capital of northern Tanzania. It serves as an excellent base from which to explore the remarkably scenic surrounding area which includes majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as the Manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro National Parks. Arusha is a good spot to take a day or two off from the safari circuit as it features a temperate climate and lush surrounds. Visitors can look forward to exploring the wildlife-abundant Serengeti National Park; the magnificent Arusha National Park; and taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Meru, Africa’s fifth highest mountain.

Day Itinerary

MACHAME GATE (3020M) to MACHAME CAMP (2850M)

HIKING TIME: APPROX 5-6 HOURS
DISTANCE: APPROXIMATELY 11 KILOMETRES
HABITAT: MOUNTAIN FOREST

After breakfast your guides will come to collect you and you will drive to Machame village/gate.  After registering at the gate you will begin by entering the rain forest.  Living up to its name, there is a strong possibility of rain in the forest, which will transform the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery experience.

You will have a welcome packed lunch stop about half way and will reach the Machame camping area in the late afternoon.  The crew will set everything out at your campsite and all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the great outdoors.

HIKING TIME: APPROXIMATELY 4-5 HOURS

After an early breakfast you will climb for an hour or so to the top of the forest and then for 2 hours at a gentler gradient through the moorland zone. After a short lunch and rest, you will continue up a rocky ridge onto the stunning Shira plateau, due west of Kibo, from which you will be able to see the breathtaking glaciers. After a short hike you will reach the Shira campsite at 3,840m. The climbing crew will provide you with a tasty meal and you will then have plenty of time to sit back and relax.

Day Itinerary

SHIRA (AT 3750M) to LAVA TOWER (AT 4.600M) to BARRANCO CAMP (AT 3.940M)

HIKING TIME: APPROXIMATLEY 6-8 HOURS

DISTANCE: APPROXIMATELY 10 KILOMETRES
HABITAT: SEMI-DESERT

The route now turns east into a semi desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower.  After lunch you will climb a rocky scree path to the Lava Tower (4630m). This five hour walk will probably be your hardest day so far and some climbers may begin to feel the altitude. However our experienced team will coach you through the symptoms and provide you with all the advice and support you need.

After lunch you descend again by almost 680m to the Barranco camping area, whilst it may seem illogical to be going down at this point, you will quickly appreciate its true acclimatisation benefit. This descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for the preparation of your dinner.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Nestled at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro’s Barranco Wall, Barranco Camp is a rest stop en route to the mountain's summit. Bathroom facilities are available. Due to the area's sustainable rainfall and humidity, guests have the opportunity to spot flora and fauna.

This is a short walking day, but we recommend doing a short acclimatisation hike to the scree below the glaciers in the afternoon.

At about 23h30 you will be awoken to some tea and biscuits and will make a move into the night. From Stella Point you will normally encounter snow all the way on your 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa and achievement you will remember for the rest of your life.

The walk back to Barafu from the summit, takes about 3 hours. Here you will have a well earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear, before heading down to Mweka hut (3,100m). The route is not difficult and will take you down the rock and scree path into the moorland and eventually into the forest. Here you will rest and feel proud of your achievement.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Mweka Camp is conveniently located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, on the Mweka Route in Tanzania. The campsite is an ideal rest stop for climbers descending after their summit. Frequently Asked Questions

What’s Included and Excluded in Every Tour?

The inclusions and exclusions vary by tour. Each tour has its specific set of inclusions and exclusions. Please refer to the individual tour page to see what is specifically included in that tour.

How fit do I have to be

Many texts state that Kilimanjaro is “easily accessible”. However, you should not underestimate this mountain. There are no technical mountaineering skills required, but general fitness is necessary. However, the biggest problem for climbers is the effects of high altitude, which seem to be unrelated to fitness, age, or gender.

It is a good idea to start some physical training prior to the trek, which might include aerobic cross training and hiking to familiarise your body with the rigors of the trek. The fitter you are, the easier the climb will be for you. Determination and will power is another important factor.

Please use the main menu on the left to browse through our section “Resources>Health information for Kilimanjaro climbers”.

What luggage should I pack?

It is important to keep luggage to the barest minimum when on trek, as this will ease the burden of the drivers, vehicles and porters. Baggage should be of the round squashy type rather than hard suitcases that are difficult to fit into jeeps. Try to use something that is both lockable and waterproof as luggage can often end up sitting on the roof of the vehicle. It is a good idea to bring another smaller bag so that unwanted clothes can be kept in it at the hotel when you go on a trek. This also helps to keep city clothes clean and free from dust. You should also bring a small day pack which can be carried while hiking or riding or can be readily accessible when you are traveling in the vehicles on long drives.

On camping trips, all equipment will be provided except for a 4-season sleeping bag. You do not need to provide any other camping gear; only personal belongings. See our Kilimanjaro packing list and Safari packing list.

It should be noted that the luggage limit per person on domestic flights is 15-20 kg per person (checked-in and hand luggage).

On your inbound flight, don’t check in items that you absolutely need (such as medicines), as it is not uncommon that checked-in luggage gets misdirected and arrives in Tanzania a couple of days after you. It is better to have such items in your hand luggage.

preference, let us know, and we will offer alternatives from our vast network of company-owned and partner accommodations. Booking with us allows you to enjoy discounted rates as we have special agreements with our partners.

What route should I climb?

Around 80% of climbers choose the Marangu Route (5 or 6 days), which is commonly referred to as the “Tourist” or “Coca Cola” Route. The rest usually goes for the Umbwe, Rongai, or Machame Route (6 or 7 days). The other two routes (Shira and Lemosho) are far less frequented and therefore allow for a more remote and natural experience.

Please note that many of the routes meet on a mid-way point and there are only three routes to the summit.

Please see our route comparison table, read the descriptions of the routes, and ask us if you have any questions.

When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year.

January to March is a very good month with mild temperatures and almost no clouds in the morning and late afternoon. During the day, however, there might be few short rain showers or little snow on the summit. The main rainy season starts end of March and lasts until the end of May. For Kilimanjaro climbers, this means that clouds may block visibility and there might be heavy rains on the lower altitudes and snow on the summit. June, July, and August can be cold, but visibility is usually very good. Temperatures rise in September and October, however, during this time of the year, there is often a belt of mist on the middle altitudes, leaving the summit’s peak through the clouds. November and December usually have perfect visibility in the nights and morning, but short rains during the day and thunderstorms in the late afternoon are common.

For Kilimanjaro climbers, a factor to take into account is the full moon – it is a unique experience to climb the roof of Africa lit under the shining moonlight only without having to use headlights.

In the countryside, or when communicating with children, local women, or individuals of lower school education, it might, however, be difficult to speak in English.

It is appreciated by locals if travelers can speak some words in Swahili. A few words are surprisingly easy to master. It is a good idea to spend a few dollars to purchase a Swahili phrasebook.
